School Sport Canada Announces First Canadian Invitational Track and Field Event for High School Athletes

TORONTO, February 6, 2012 – For the 200,000 high school track and field athletes in Canada, the bar has been raised. Today, in a celebration of sport, culture, and youth, School Sport Canada – in a joint venture with integrated marketing agency TrojanOne – Nike Canada, and Olympic athletes Perdita Felicien, Phylicia George, and Priscilla Lopes- Schliep announced the Nike High School Grand Prix, the first Canadian invitational track and field event for high school athletes.

“The Nike High School Grand Prix is an amazing opportunity for Canadian track and field student athletes to come together in celebration of their sport," said Doug Gellatly, President, School Sport Canada. "The goal here is to allow students to develop new skills, make new friends, and have the experience of a lifetime. I'm really looking forward to seeing it all come to life in May."

One male and one female high school-level team from 12 participating provinces and territories will be selected by their provincial/territorial high school athletic association to participate in ten track and field events. The meet is scheduled to take place at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Stadium on May 12, 2012, with social and educational activities for the participants taking place over the course of the weekend. Over 300 athletes will be selected to compete.

"Working with School Sport Canada and Nike to bring the Nike High School Grand Prix to life has been an exciting process," said Mark Harrison, President, TrojanOne. "When we came to Nike and School Sport Canada with the event, we could all immediately see that this was an unique way to bring high school athletes together. The Nike High School Grand Prix will be a premier, once-in-a-lifetime track and field experience for all participants that we hope will create lasting memories."

The Nike High School Grand Prix events include: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m run, 110m hurdles (boys), 100m hurdles (girls), long jump, high jump, shot-put and the 4 x 100m cross-provincial relay.

“At Nike, we believe in the power of sport and its ability to transform lives,” said Chris Rigney, Head of Sports Marketing, Nike Canada. “The Grand Prix will be a great opportunity for Canada’s high school track and field athletes to compete at a national level for the first time ever in this country.”

By bringing high school athletes from across the county together in a celebration of sport, the Nike High School Grand Prix aims to inspire excellence while bringing students, teachers, coaches, families and friends together to celebrate the sport of track and field.
