Setterington shifts into higher gear

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD

Last Updated: May 13, 2011 11:35am

It's a pretty gutsy move to jump from the midget track and field ranks right into senior, but it's a leap Nicole Setterington is making with ease.

The Grade 10 student at Oakridge, who burst onto the high-school scene last year, made the decision about a month ago to tackle the senior 100-metre hurdles and it's paying off handsomely. She clocked 14.36 seconds at an Athletic Ontario meet two weeks ago in Toronto, easily surpassing the 14.6-second qualifying standard for the world youth championships in Lille, France, July 6-10.

Setterington, just turned 16, bettered that Thursday at Day 1 of the TVRAA Central track and field championships at TD Waterhouse Stadium, finishing second to Central's Christine MacNeill with a time of 14.34 seconds. MacNeill, who was second to Setterington by 0.01 seconds in the Toronto meet, won with a 14.26 clocking.
