From Saints to Spartans
“I really like Michigan State and that was the school I was hoping to go to in the first place.” – Jellisa Westney
If you’re not first, you’re last. While that might just be a line from a movie, it rings true for Jellisa Westney.
Despite catching the eye of many college suitors after her three-medal performance at the OFSAA track and field championships earlier this month, the 17-year-old St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School senior went with the first U.S. college who approached her prior to OFSAA and recently accepted a scholarship at Michigan State University.
Really, according to Westney, there was no contest. Sure, the University of Buffalo talked to her after the 400-metre event at OFSAA – where she came back to win bronze despite just racing in the 100m final – and the University of Iowa messaged her on Facebook, as well as some interest shown by Kent State, but she admits that she looked into them just to see what else was out there as far as offers.
